Varamahalakshmi Vratam (also known as Varalakshmi Vratham) is one of the most auspicious festivals dedicated to Goddess Mahalakshmi, the deity of wealth, prosperity and well-being. It is observed mainly by married women across Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana on the Friday before the full moon in the Hindu month of Shravana (July to August).
Worshipping Goddess Varamahalakshmi is believed to be equal to worshipping Ashtalakshmi, the eight forms of Lakshmi that represent wealth, earth, wisdom, love, fame, peace, contentment and strength. Devotees pray for the health, happiness and prosperity of their families.
A kalasham is decorated as the Goddess with a coconut, mango leaves, turmeric, kumkum and fresh flowers, and placed on a bed of rice. Women tie a sacred yellow thread, offer flowers, fruits and sweets, and perform aarti. Fresh, fragrant flowers and garlands are an essential part of the ritual.
Traditional favourites include jasmine (malli), lotus, marigold, rose, tuberose and chrysanthemum, along with garlands and loose flowers to decorate the kalasham and pooja area. Fresh flowers symbolise purity and devotion, and welcoming the Goddess with fragrant blooms is considered highly auspicious.
